Day 1: Savannah GA / Beaufort SC
Fly to Savannah where you’ll tour one of Savannah’s most historic homes. Johnny Mercer stops by to sing a bit of “Moon River” and tell us about his life here. Enjoy a Chatham Artillery Punch Mint Julep– Savannah’s secrete weapon! Smooth with a kick of Colonial cannon! Check in to The Beaufort Inn for 4 nights in the historic district. Experience luxury accommodations within its historic architecture, lush gardens, sparkling fountains, inviting verandas and porches lined with rocking chairs. This evening enjoy a Welcome Reception with appetizers and drinks on an Antebellum porch. Followed by your Welcome Dinner with water views and the sunset inside the Historic Antebellum house! Day 2: Beaufort SC / St. Helena Island / Hunting Island
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then we’re off to Catch the Spirit of the Islands onboard our Convertible Sprinters with 360-degree unobstructed panoramic views. Travel the beaches and backroads inaccessible on a full-sized motorcoach while we discover what makes this area so unique. Roll back the retractable roof once we pull off of the main roads. Enjoy the beach as the beach should be enjoyed! Smell the earthy marsh and salty tidal air, soak in the sunlight, and enjoy the fresh air breezes. This morning we “Journey from Slavery to Freedom” catching the spirit of St. Helena’s island life and its unique history and heritage. Next visit the Praise House, Pat Conroy Grave, Penn Center and the Slave Cemetery. See the Plantation House from the impressive Avenue of Oaks. Next we are off to do a little beach combing at an undisturbed and beautiful barrier island. See the lighthouse, learn its history and climb, if you dare! Walk the beach while learning about the unique eco-systems of this area, an Audubon and turtle preserve.
Explore St Helena Island that was the location of the Vietnam Beach Scene where Forrest Gump carried Bubba to safety. Lunch is a Low Country Shrimp Boil, AKA Frogmore Stew, served at the Sea Island Center where we will “Hear the Rest of the Story” from a local storyteller and historical interpreter. Next we will visit the Shrimp Docks, where your shrimp was harvested for our Low Country Boil today! Owned by a local shrimper, see how they catch from the sea with their nets, boats and docks. Get a close-up experience of low country life and the history of shrimping on the island. Visit the docks and learn the history, heritage and traditions of the commercial shrimping in the low country. See the boats and docks where Forrest Gump was depicted. On the journey back to the hotel, time permitting, we will stop at a local farm market for a chance to purchase and take back some homemade culinary delights such as WEE-Gumbo or pick a watermelon to enjoy at the hotel this evening. Enjoy a Welcome Reception at historic Rhett House in Downtown Beaufot. You will be greeted with a glass of wine, light hors d’oeuvres and great company for an enjoyable southern social. Day Three: Beaufort SC / Savannah GA
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then we’ll journey under an hour away today to enjoy a unique tour of Savannah in our convertible mini bus! This is the best way to view the historic beauty of Savannah! Enjoy expansive 360 degree panoramic views from this vehicle with a fully retractable glass top. See Historic steeples, Spanish moss and Georgia sunshine as we enjoy a 90 minute driving tour of the Historic District before we venture off to discover the best of the Low Country! Next, visit a 100-year old Gullah Geechee Community quietly isolated on the banks of Moon River (Yes, THAT Moon River!), and learn about the unique aspects of their oyster and crab aquaculture practiced for over a century. Here we will enjoy a BBQ lunch served by the regional cook off BBQ Master! Lunch is served on the deck surrounded by incredible Marsh views! Today we’ll see one of the largest rows of Live Oaks and Spanish moss in the U.S. Colonial interpreters will tell the story of the Estate of Noble Jones (1702-1775). Try your hand at Cricket on the original grass Cricket lawn located here. Enjoy Oyster Appetizers while the sunsets from a porch nestled in the heart of Sandfly offering panoramic views of the waters of the marsh and tidal inlet. Day Four: Beaufort SC / Horse Drawn Carriage / River Tour & Dolphin Watch
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Put on your most comfortable shoes, there is no transportation until evening. All is walkable from your hotel. Take a Southern Rose Horse Drawn Carriage Ride and learn about Beaufort’s history, see Hollywood movie sets, see gorgeous gardens, ancient churches and many Civil War era Antebellum homes. Board boats and relax in the balmy breeze on Captain Dick’s Beaufort River Tour & Dolphin Watch. The Captain and First Mate lead our tour amidst the ecology of the Salt Marsh which includes dolphins, osprey and more! Enjoy lunch on your own and a free time. Later we depart from hotel on a Sprinter. Tour the Kazoo Factory and Museum which contains historical kazoos from the collection of Boaz Frankel, Barbara Stewart and Rick Hubbard. You’ll learn all about how the kazoo was invented and how it has come to be America’s most beloved musical instrument. Continue to historic Fripp Plantation where you’ll enjoy an Oyster Roasts and Antebellum Dance with oysters, fish, hush puppies, and coleslaw while surrounded with Antebellum and Gospel entertainment. Day Five: Beaufort SC / Okatie SC / Savannah GA / Fly Home
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel prior to checking out. Visit the Port Royal Sound Foundation Maritime Center where we will experience, discover, explore and connect with these waters, some of the most pristine in the country. Enjoy dynamic exhibits that dive into the ecology, history, culture, art and recreation that help define the Sound. See amazing animals, including many species of fish in our 3,000-gallon aquarium. Next, board boats with our naturalist guides who will take us through the very unique waterways and eco-systems of the sound. This unique system is created by the daily large inflow of fresh water from the ACE Basin. Continue to Savannah where you’ll have time to enjoy lunch on your own and free time along Savannah’s famous Riverwalk before departing for home, refreshed, relaxed and your spirit renewed by our time in Savannah and Beaufort.
