How perfectly planned is your guided vacation in Spain in that you have much of your time in Toledo on your own! Our local guide will meet you for a walking tour of the town, but then you are on your own to delve into the history, the architecture, and the wonderful shopping this remarkable town offers.

Toledo is set on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain. It’s well known for the medieval Arab, Jewish and Christian monuments in its walled old city, and as the former home of the artist El Greco. The Moorish Bisagra Gate and the Sol Gate, open into the old quarter, where the Plaza de Zocodover is a lively central meeting place. It’s quaint and completely charming and I guarantee you will love it.

We know that Spain is inundated with historic cities, so what makes Toledo so special?  Most Spanish cities have been swallowed up by the modern – keeping their historic landmarks – but urbanized and contemporary. But, Toledo is still all history with its narrow, winding, cobbled streets – often leading nowhere – steep inclines and ancient buildings, all constrained by the old city walls – a step back in time. Talk to people and they will inform you that “Toledo captures the essence of Spain,” or that “Toledo is the soul of Spain.” The city, like Jerusalem, is a city of three religions, with Muslims (the Moors in Spanish history), Jews and Christians all adding to the montage that is unique to the city.   Presently it is the Christian churches, monasteries and convents that are prevalent, although you will find the Moorish influences everywhere.  Plus… two historic synagogues!

Almost at the core of the city is the huge Gothic cathedral, built on the site of the former Grand Mosque. Not too far away is the massive Alcázar (once a fortress, now a military academy). I invite you to cross to the other side of the river Tagus and marvel at how the cathedral and the fortress dominate the skyline. It is this skyline that depicts perfectly the role the church and the military had in shaping Spain. This guided tour of Spain takes you to interesting places and lets you explore all that truly excites you. Toledo is a small jewel, set in the beautiful tiara that IS Spain.

Please review the complete itinerary and start planning your guided vacation in Spain – and do a little research on this gem of a city that is Toledo! It will make the trip that much more exciting.
